Residence compound
Location: Houlakia, Mykonos, Cyclades, Greece
Construction: 2010
The two residential complexes consisting of 3 and 4 houses each, are located in “Houlakia”, on the west side of the island of Mykonos. The site has a panoramic view of the Aegean Sea, the surrounding islands of Dilos, Syros and Tinos and a spectacular view of the sunset. The architectural style blends perfectly with the surrounding landscape using local natural materials in accordance with the Mykonian tradition and respectful of the Cycladic architecture. The transition to each residence is carried out via a series of successive external stairs and paths which are arranged parallel to the retaining walls creating paved paths. For the base of each residence local stone was chosen so as to be incorporated compatibly with the environment, while thick plastered walls ensure coolness indoors during the warm summer months. Old regional techniques were used for the bathrooms which were made entirely out of screed and the fireplace was constructed by old bricks. Considering the winds on the Cycladic Island, outside areas have been sheltered with stone walls and built in sitting areas for the utmost indulgence of the outdoors. The two outdoor pools have an extended outdoor space, with a covered pergola and a built-in bench. A well with a private water supply has been provided, to accommodate the entire compound.
